STEP 6: PI Submits Annual Report and Renews Proposal to Continue Research

Approval is valid until the expiration date of your protocol. Under the new Common Rule exempt studies no longer have an expiration date. It is important that researchers close any completed/inactive studies since expedited studies will not naturally terminate upon an expiration date as would occur previously. For studies that do have an expiration date, you are required to apply for a renewal at least 45 days before the expiration date for as long as the study is active.
